Big Query re. my anti-virus and trojans
I don't know if anybody can help me out on ths, but here goes - I have McAfee Security Centre which I've always thought was good, but now I'm not
so sure, I think the anti virus is overdoing it (picking files out as infected with trojans when they're possibly not).
I have found a list of files which McAfee has put into isolation, saying they all contain trojans.
I think some of the files are Microsoft updates and one is the exe. file from a spyware program that I had been using for over a year and found no
problems with - the spyware program suddenley stopped working because it couldn't find the exe. file, and now I know why
Is there anyway I can check on these files, (obviously not with McAfee!) to see if they really are infected with a trojan or not

I wouldn't give you a $.05 for either one.
If you want a good, FREE and very reliable anti-virus program, go here:
http://avast.com
Go to the downloads section and get the free home edition, register it every 6 months and it updates daily.
I have been running it on my pc for at least 5 years now and we also run it on our dedicated game server and have been for over a year.

Yes I know Avast, I have it on my laptop computer and my husband and daughter have it on their computers too. It was me that told them about it
....lol
The way things are going, I'll have no exe. files left, they'll all be in isolation, put there by McAfee! Still at least I know where to find my
missing exe. files ...lol
Seriously though, it's now getting beyond a joke, McAfee has even stopped Microsoft Windows updates from installing because they say some of them
have a trojan. I did manage to install one update it didn't like by installing the updates when computer was shutting down but alas as soon as I
started the computer up again, McAfee pounced on it again
It's also done the same thing twice on sites online, saying there is a trojan on them and I know for a fact that one of them had no trojan, as it's
owner had no hesitation in telling me!
But all this is not solving my original problem which is, how can I check whether these files which have been put in isolation are infected or not

Bull - I've also used AVG on one of the other computers, but since they've starting doing their paid for editions, they've started to be awkward
about updating the free home edition so I changed it to Avast, less hassle
I had the AVG anti rootkit program on this computer at one time when it was free and used to be able to update it, but not any more - no more updates
for the free version, only the version which is now in with their paid for security package. I now use the Sophos free anti rootkit

step by step:
1. move the files to a different directory.
2. uninstall mcaffee.
3. put the mcaffee cd in the rubbish bin.
4. install either AVG or Avast and do a scan.
Problems all solved and no more problems.

Lol..
I do not know why we put any information on this site it seems to be ignored..
There have been numerous posts on virus checkers and their associated problems..
We have always recommended Avast as a good reliable virus checker Craig and I have been using it for ages both on Window XP & Vista.
We both use spy sweeper as well I pay for this on a yearly basis and i have had no problems.
Lioness Install Avast and do a deep virus scan of all your drives. Mcaffee should not effect Avast from running, but just disable Mcaffee until you
are satisfied you have no viruses on your machine..

Ad Aware and Spybot S&D used together are the best for spyware, add spy sweeper and would probably have the perfect combo. Spybot has "resident
sheild" that is brilliant for notifying you when something wants to change the registry, if you are not installing something and it gives a warning
select no.
Oh Lioness remove Mcaffee and any Symantec garbage. its all bloatware and not worth using. if you need firewall/spyware/antivirus you can get much
better for free.

I always remove Norton security as I did on my laptop - it always starts to play up after a few months, but up till now I've had no problems with
McAfee and it's only the anti virus that is causing the problems, the firewall is fine and so is Site Advisor but one of the biggest problems with it
is that it cannot be shut down like other programs can
Found a way of disabling the McAfee anti virus and now installed Avast and did a full virus scan. Avast found 2 trojans and I have deleted both.
Hopefully that has sorted my problem

LMAO....
Will you start using Avast now as your virus checker..
As for a firewall I find the Windows one quite adequate and less intrusive than others..
If you still want to use a 3rd party firewall then I would suggest Zone Alarm it seems to be the best of the bunch..
Cheers

I am using Avast as my virus checker now, and acquired Spy Sweeper as my anti spyware which has replaced my Spyware Doctor which was overdoing it as
well, now deleted!
I have disabled the McAfee anti virus but am still using the firewall and site adviser which cause no problems at all.
I have used Zone Alarm as my firewall, but found it more intrusive than McAfee so I'll stick with McAfee on that one unless I start getting problems
with it, then I'll rethink that one but at the moment it's fine.
I think I've now got myself sorted out computer securitywise - for the time being anway
Thanks Ice, and the 'Mood' and Avatar remain
............ for the time being anyway ...lol
