Map Making - Heli's/AI


Hi Guys,
I am in the process of making some COOP maps for the new Bearforce Mod and i'm having a few problems with getting the AI to do certain things.

I have heli's flying around WP's and they shoot at me when they see me, but for some reason instead of continuing to target me they just carry on following their WP's.

In addition i can't certain weapons i.e. the heli's that have rockets & 50 cals (apaches i believe) will only fire their 50cal's at me not the rockets. I can the get the littlebirds with rockets to fire them but not the apaches.

I use DF Med for making the maps & have a little limited knowledge about .wac files.
I have set up area triggers to get the AI into the choppers/planes etc & get them flying around but i cant see anything in the events to trigger them to attack properly, and believe me i have spent hours trying to get it to work & probably tried every possible combination i can think of. I suspect i need to write this into the .wac file to get it to work but could really use some expert help as it is driving me to drink.....lol.

One technique is to change the AI Textfile callout:

In the MED, highlight your helo and open the ITEM Attributes window, AI Variables...
Open the pull-down menu AI Textfile and change it to something else...

for example, let's say you're using the flyable Nb0-105 with benches,
the default AI Textfile will be Drivable-Little Bird Benches
go down the list and select Plane-A10,Slow(Rockets)

Your un-armed Nb0 now becomes a minigun & rocket-firing monster. Even if the helo is set to follow waypoints, it will break off of it's programmed flight and chase you to the ends of the earth. Once it's killed you, it will resume its normal flightpath.

the AI Textfiles I prefer are:

Helo-Apache (Advanced Air Attack) air-to-air combat
Helo-Apache (Advanced Ground Attack) (Really nasty with guided missles!!!)
Plane-A10,Slow (Rockets) (the one I use most)

These AI Textfiles will not only cause the helo to shoot tactically, but will also cause them to fly tactically, and as they duck and weave, will make them very difficult to shoot down.

Note- changing the pilot's Accuracy and attack range will NOT modify the accuracy and range of the helo's shooting with these AI files. Also, changing the helo's Combat Speed and Patrol Speed will have NO effect on the speed of the new AI... it will only kick in when the bird resumes its normal WP flight path.

If you want the gunners on the Blackhawk, Super Puma, or Chinook to target you more effectively, give the helo a figure-eight flight path over its objective. Set the gunners to have an attack/engagement range of about 500 m or more. Remember- you're not only dealing with map distance, but also with elevation. So, if your helo is 200 m away, and 100 m up... they probably won't shoot at you if you set their engagement range at 200 m; change it to 300 m instead.

:F This AI Textfile change works with boats too.

For example, if you want to give any AI boat rockets... change its AI Textfile to Boat-Nanuchka Frigate. This even works with the LCAC.

And remember, with these special AI Textfiles, it's the vehicle that does the shooting; not the driver.
