How to use the DFX MED - basic steps
Ok, a small basic, very basic tut, on how to use the Delta Force Xtreme Map Editor, which comes with the game.
For those, who are too lazy to read the manual...
STEP 1:
Open the MED and select EDIT, then choose General Information from the list or press Ctrl+I to bring up the window.
STEP 2:
The upper left corner (marked with red exclamation point) is the critical spot.
First, type the maps name, then the creators name a.k.a. your nickname.
Pick a terrain from the list and choose the game type, I left it as "Single Player" for this tutorial.
Pay attention at other things, underlined red, pretty much self-explanatory, the "Enviroment File" is critical, too, if you want an atmosphere in
your map.
Click "OK" at the bottom left corner to apply the settings
STEP 3:
Your screen should now look like this:
Again, if you have spotted, the "Grid size" is underlined again. Set it to somewhere between 2m to 32m to suit you, depending on the size of
objects, you are adding to the game or how precise do you want to be, when placing the objects into the map.
Next to the "Grid size" is the "View" and "Snap". Tick "Snap", if you want objects to automatically snap to the grid. Make sure, that the grid
is the right size, or else the objects may be miles apart!
Above are the C H D buttons.
C is the Color map, you see the color of the terrain (in the pic)
H is the height map. Turns everything green, lighter areas are high spots on the terrain (hills, mountains), darker are the lower spots (valleys,
areas below the 0 height)
D is the Delta map. No, doesnt show Delta boys kicking some arse, it shows the even/uneven terrain. Useful, if you are looking for a nice, level spot
to build on.
STEP 4:
Right click somewhere on the terrain to bring up the right-click menu, select INSERT.
Now, a new window will open. Here you can choose any kind of objects, effects and markers, avaiable. For now, we will choose the "Markers" and
"start, player" marker (somewhere at the bottom of the list, by the way)
Select this, then click OK to place it into the map.
Now, you'll need to save and export the map into your game directory, so you can play it.
Select File, then Save and Export.
A new window will pop up.
Give the file the same name as the map name, so you wont confuse it.
At the line, which is underlined red, type that name and click OK.
Notes:
-after you save and export the map, a window will pop up with info about the data, you exported. Nothing serious or fun, click OK to close it.
-since the map was exported as Single Player, it should appear in that list. For Multiplayer maps (TKOTH, TDM), host a LAN game to see the map.
-any related questions are to be ask in this thread.
