Smaller Wav Files

What programs do you guys use to make the wav files smaller(in size(kb/mb) not length)?

I have been WavPad Sound Editor. It works great exept when i need the wav to be a smaller size.

Thanks..

Ok, you are talking something along the lines of audio compression.

What audio compression does is takes the sound data and encrypts it into a form that is smaller in size, but usually at the loss of some sound quality.

A very good analog is that of JPEG files, you can decrease the MB size of the JPEG by decreasing the quality.

WAV's typically have a more fundamental way of doing this by adjusting what is known as the sampling rate or sampling frequency.

A sampling rate of 44.2KHz is the industry standard for good to high quality sound files.

You can decrease this rate to say, 20KHz or so, to get a smaller MB size. But, in doing so you'll lose the quality of the sound file, in particular the high-frequency sounds.

A high-quality sound file has clean high notes and crisp percussion, while a low-quality sound file only has good Bass sounds.

Now, to answer your question, I do not know if WavPad allows you to adjust the sampling rate, but I do know that Audacity does.

What kind of sound are you trying to compress?

Time is not my enemy, although we do have many disagreements...

I'm trying to make smaller .wav files.

Yeah I'm able to adjust the sample rate in WavPad But I thought BHD only uses... PCM 32 Khz 16 bit? I remember having problems with the sample rates a couple years ago with BHD. They wouldn't play if it were anything different than 32 Khz 16 bit. I'll have to try different compressions and play them in the game to see if they'll work...

I use sndrec32.exe. It comes with Windows XP.

Most DFBHD dialog is in IMA ADPCM format, 22,050 kHz; 4 bit; Mono.

A lot of environmental, item and weapon sounds are in PCM 22,050 kHz; 8 bit; Mono.
